Hi,

I saw Evita on Thursday night and the cast had a standing ovation, not all the theatre stood but it was very well received.

Eli, your report was so like my own that I will not repeat it. I also felt that PQ would not have enough meat in this production but was delighted to see how much he got out of it.

I had not seen the original show so no comparison and like Eli had only recently seen the film on DVD and was not impressed.

So I went with an open mind and my test of how much I enjoyed the evening stood the test. I didn't touch my earrings once all night! My other half always ask me this question as he knows from experience I start to twist my earings when something is not going right on stage.

There are some lovely little touches which so many Directors miss - I won't say too much so as not to spoil it for those who have yet to see the show. PQ's first entry is very interesting, the light started to click just before !! Keep this in mind when you go. The whole company were very good, a real ensemble who worked together so well. No real weak spots and bodes well for the alternates when they are on. Spot the PQ one in the first act!!

I loved the flow of the whole show, no interuptions other than the interval which all adds to the charm of the show. I had a wonderful seat which couldn't have been better, I will be back to see it again and if there are any changes. It is a bit short, and I think the rise of Peron, then his fall and than the rise again is integral to the story and it is a pity this has been missed, but it is still a very good show - at least I think so.

A few niggles - the orchestra was not at its best at the strat on Thursday, and I would have have like to see less of the atmospheric lighting all the time, but lighting is one of my areas so do tend to nit pick!!

A final point on the way out, a group of Americans were behind me, were talking ecitedly about the show and how they had enjoyed it, this ioncluded discussions on whether Peron was PQ - they asked the door steward if it was, she didn't know, so I turned and said yes, and they were delighted they had finally seen him having seen the DVD of 10AC. It made their night! There were about 10 of them but not one programme between them!

Me again, don’t worry, this time I’m going to try and be brief. ;D
Tammy, thank you for your great review, so glad you share my same feelings about the show.

"I saw Evita on Thursday night and the cast had a standing ovation, not all the theatre stood but it was very well received."

On my night the audience were disappointing to say the least… It’s true that it’s hard to find the right “clapping moments” in a new show, but IMO they were rather thrifty anyway… And at the curtain calls I was one of the very few who gave Elena the standing ovation she deserved. I was furious against my fellow-patrons!!!

"I also felt that PQ would not have enough meat in this production but was delighted to see how much he got out of it."

And he has all the hardest bits, don’t you think? Though the show is entirely sung-through, there were moments in PQ’s lines where it was impossible to find a clear melody. They reminded me of the numbers he sings in the "Listen Up" album. I also noticed that the vocal range required for the role of Perón is almost as wide as Eva’s, and PQ got away with both the deepest and the highest notes with flying colours.

"I loved the flow of the whole show, no interuptions other than the interval which all adds to the charm of the show."

I personally found the first 15 minutes or so a bit slow… but I guess that was to be expected, considering that as we know the show begins with a funeral… I clearly felt the show “took off” for the best with the “Buenos Aires” number: WOW!

"A final point on the way out, a group of Americans were behind me, were talking ecitedly about the show and how they had enjoyed it, this ioncluded discussions on whether Peron was PQ - they asked the door steward if it was, she didn't know, so I turned and said yes, and they were delighted they had finally seen him having seen the DVD of 10AC. It made their night! There were about 10 of them but not one programme between them!"

A shame indeed, both on the group for their lazyness and probably even more on the usher for his lack of knowledge! On my night I was politely stopped on my way out by a middle-aged guy who asked me how I had liked the show. I’m sure he rushed to buy his ticket after my reply!! :D :D

All the best,
Eli

hi, Yes I was surprised at the vocal range required by PQ for Peron. Having only seen the DVD, Peron's singing was very restricted, but I suppose this is the film world and the "star" gets it all.

I know what you mean about the clapping, the end is so sad that you have to gulp a bit before you clap. I think I was in the middle of some "professional guests" who were getting ready to compare it with the original and were still doing it in the interval, but they were amongst the first to get up and cheer at the end so it obvisously got them.

I agree, Elana is great and got all the moods of the role just right. As for the end it is heartbreaking between the two of them. The bed scene still needs some attention in my mind, but not as bad as I thought it would be from some reports I had read.

I can't wait to see it again, but it will have to be later in the year as I don't expect to be in the UK for a bit..............would love to be a fly on the wall on opening night.

Thanks for the reviews!!!! The longer the better ;D

I saw it yesterday and loved it...I too had never seen it live, I had only watched the movie once a few years ago but didn't remember much of it. For some reason I thought it would feel too short (maybe it's the consequence of being accustomed to watch neverending musicals like Les Mis) but it didn't, it was just great!
I'm afraid I didn't like Mr Rawle's Che very much, but PQ and Elena Roger were amazing
...I want to go again!!!!!!!!! :D

oh and yes, The Secret Garden was the first thing that came to my mind when I saw that picture ;)

 "Evita" Merchandise

A wide range of Evita merchandise, currently sold at the Adelphi theatre, is now available for online purchase on the RUG website.

Too bad that the programme is not included, that would have made life easier for those seeking to get an autographed copy.

Saw the show on Saturday night and was left speechless - absolutely stunning.

Great performance from PQ, and he seems to be enjoying it.

Can't wait to see it again :)

A new photo with Philip has been added to RUG's Evita website (www.evitathemusical.com). And Philip is in the background of the photo with "Che" (the one where he's by himself).

Has anybody here met him at the stage door yet? I am going next week, it would be helpful to know how long you waited and did he stop to sign programmes etc. I will definately try and get a photograph for the picture section!

 RUG website updated

The Evita section of the RUG general website has been updated with new sections, though in our view their layout make it hard to to distinguish between the items that refer to the original production and the new ones...
There's also one new picture of Eva and PQ-Peron in uniform.

You might need to register/log in to see some of the new features.
