PQ we all know is very relaxed about his "fame" However I have recently come across PQ being mentioned in others' CV's. The most recent one was Nigel Lilley MD for La Cage and many other west end shows who includes in his CV - MD for Philip Quast at the Donmar. I can't find my CD of this but I must admit I thought the MD was Jason E Brown. Also another mention of PQ is in the CV of James Barron, who is currently appearing in Betty Blue Eyes he states South Pacific with Philip Quast (NT). It just goes to show how others in the business think of PQ.

I see what you mean. great lets hope Trevor Nunn reads that. I understand his production of Follies might still go ahead some time.
I saw 2nd Productions version of Follies a couple of weeks ago at the Pleasant Theatre - It was a really enjoyable show, although I must admit PQ kept coming to mind when ever Ben sang. Not to take it away from their Ben who did a good job, but did not have that depth PQ has.
I love The Pleasant which is possibly better known as a Comedy Theatre, but now has branched out into more Musicals etc. Small compact perhaps a bit smaller that The Menier but 2nd Company has recently put on both Company and Follies there which was certainly worth a visit.
What I find with PQ is that he has only to open his mouth to sing or act and you are instantly drawn in. His voice just wraps around you what ever expression he uses. I cannot help but compare him with Placido Domingo who does the same to me. I don't mean they sing like each other they just stop me in my tracks. I will never forget PQ singing 'Move On' at The National for Stephen Pimlott's Memorial Concert. When he finished it seemed like every-one in my row where trying to read the running schedule for the concert, and to listen to folk as they walked out talking about him. It was clear that a lot of his professional colleagues did not know who he was, other than being from OZ.

I was watching Hugh Jackman's 'Inside the Actor's Studio' episode and PQ is mentioned! I have been looking more closely at Hugh's work since he was cast in les mis of course. For those not familiar with this US programme...its a very long running and respected show and has featured all the great 'names'. Its kind of an Actor's 'this is your Life' but focusing on their career and the audience is composed of drama students. It was interesting to hear Hugh talk about worling with Trevor Nunn at the RSC and describing the same method PQ has often related of 'saying the lyrics for several weeks before singing them'. I suppose it is natural that Hugh and PQ should know each other as they were in London the same time and both appeared at the Hey Mr Producer performance. I had read PQ mention going to see Hugh in Oklahoma! and how he relaxed and enjoyed it very much. It was interesting how Hugh, to me, came over more as a stage actor than a movie star...I definitely felt his heart was in theatre. WELL The last section of the show always involves taking questions from the students in the audience. The very first one was a student asking advice on how to sing Soliloquy in Carousel. And Hugh said : Ha you are in luck! A friend of mine, Philip Quast, a great actor, was best friends with Sondhiem and had worked for hours with him on this very song...and he passed it on to me....' And he goes on to give some specifics...Very interesting. The whole show is available to watch on youtube. Hugh Jackman Inside the Actor's Studio (Then put a number 1 to 5 and you will get that segment. The bit refering directly to PQ is on number 5 and begins about 2:20 on the clock. The whole thing is worth watching though for Musical Theatre fans. Sorry if you already knew about this....thought I'd share. I always get a thrill when PQ is mentioned. I know he doesn't seek fame....but I can't help wanting him to be appreciated.

Hi Janet, welcome to the PQG Board - and thanks for reviving it with your recent posts, things have been rather quite lately.
Above all, thanks for spotting and sharing that "Actors' Studio" clip, a real gem. I gather PQ has been in touch with HJ for a while. Being a more experienced - and slightly more mature - stage performer it's not surprising that he gave HJ useful tips at the start of his career. It was PQ who encouraged HJ to audition for the role of Joe Gillis in the Australian production of Sunset Boulevard back in 1996, fundamentally because Trevor Nunn was going to directing it. As we know, two years later HJ was called to London by T Nunn to play Curly in the NT production of Oklahoma!, which proves in a way that PQ's initial advice really bore fruit.

Wow, that is wonderful. I was a teacher before I became a full time artist and I still get a kick out of seeing ex-students etc go on to greater things. And its also great to have that acknowledged by them. What is so impressive about theatre performers in general is the way they support and help each other. I think its because they have a mutual respect for anyone who puts themselves through the ordeal of going on stage. Many thanks for the welcome.
