Long and interesting article by Michael Coveney about the story behind Evita in today's Independent:

Did we all go to see Evita during the first week or something? :-)

I went on Friday the 9th, half-baked standing ovation but wow! what a performance! I can hardly imagine how this will end up when the previews were this good...or am I biased? I have a ticket for August as well, for comparison, but I think I may end up going a few more times while I have the chance.

Hi Supposedly, I went last Saturday and the show was great , Abbie Osmon was playing Eva, I didn't realise it was her first performance she was very good I am taking my sister-in-law at the end of July as you say to compare But i might have to fit a few more visits in too before it finishes.

Some great links from a recent post on the Whatsonstage Message Board (if clicking doesn't work, please copy/paste):
http://www.whatsonstage.com/dforum/downl....ead=11507 38280

90% of the pics are of Elena-Eva, but there are also some good ones of dashing Perón in his tuxedo on the balcony of the Casa Rosada.

For the lazy/busy ones among you ;) here are the direct links:

Thanks for the pics!

I've just come back from the press night, it was fantastic!!!!!!

Everybody put so much passion in it tonight - ok, not that I had noticed a lack of it before ;) I guess that's not a surprise, I read that the last few days Elena Roger didn't appear so to save her voice for tonight.
The show has changed a bit from the first preview; one thing I couldn't have not noticed - the first time he appears on stage, Philip doesn't make his entrance together with the other officers and then "wins"...now he comes from the side first and the others from the back of the stage after him. Actually I'm not sure I prefer it like this, but anyway... ;)

The audience was very enthusiastic, it's not a show where you can clap often, but they did their best, even clapping a couple of times where it was obviously not "expected" from us!
And at the end they got a tremendous response, everyone!!!!!!! For what I could see of the stalls from where I was (upper circle...only seats I could find) they got a standing ovation and the clapping/shouting/etc wouldn't stop! Let's hope that this enthusiasm is an anticipation of the reviews to come...
After they had come back on stage for the second time, Elena left for a minute and came back with Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice who joined the bows! Of course we made even more noise then...if possible ;D
The cast seemed absolutely thrilled by this response, and I'm sure we will see some pictures of Philip at the curtain call, holding ALW's right hand and looking soooooo happy!! :D

Thank you Snapefan for your brilliant report!!

It seems you are proving right, the first reviews in today's national press are excellent, both for the show in general and for PQ!

Short video coverage from BBC News, available online.
Pretty bad quality, but better than nothing!

Let's try and guess which one is going to be the PQG's favourite shot ;)

... and don't miss the excellent video coverage, with some beautiful glimpses of the curtain calls and other "souvenir moments"!

Thanks to the PQG Team for all your terrific updates, and to Snapefan for your great account of Opening Night!! The Daily Mail loves the show too - I don't think the review is online and I was going to type it out, but he doesn't mention Philip except for saying "Philip Quast brings touches of Robert Maxwell to Peron" ??? The bulk of the review is about Elena, he calls the show a "first-rate Evita", and finishes by saying : "The ensemble is well-drilled .... Paule Constable's lighting throws beautiful browns and yellows on to Christopher Oram's grand Buenos Aires balconies.... And the Money Kept Rolling In? I bet it will do for this show."
