 La Cage aux Folles
« Thread Started on Oct 5, 2007, 6:59am »

Although the Menier Chocolate Factory website has not published any cast updates yet, Baz Bamigboye in today's Daily Mail sounds pretty certain about Philip Quast's next musical engagement in London:

Quote:
WATCH OUT FOR...
Douglas Hodge, who will be learning how to apply mascara and a lot more besides when he stars with Philip Quast in the revamped Jerry Herman musical La Cage Aux Folles. Hodge plays Albin who, each night, dresses up as Zaza, hostess of the St Tropez nightclub of the title, and Mr Quast plays his partner George.

I love the music from this show! There are some different recordings on Itunes right now. The Original Off Broadway Recording is very good.

My favorite songs are:

"I Am What I Am" of course! :)

"Look Over There" and

"With You On My Arm" ;)

You can listen to 30 second clips there if you want to check it out.

Which recording would you say was the best recording/CD to buy?

Is it the Original Off Broadway Recording?

Or is there another better one?

Thanks

For anyone who is interested in finding out more about the show, there is a video on Youtube with John Barrowman, who played such a wonderful 'Cal Chandler' opposite Philip Quast's ' Grahame' in The Fix singing "I Am What I Am" from La Cage aux Folles. :) :) :)

There was an American version made about 10 years ago starring Robin Williams and Nathan Lane that was very funny.

Yes, it's called The Birdcage http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0115685/. I totally agree, it's an extremely entertaining movie and a successful remake - which is quite rare IMO. The film is available at a rather affordable price on Amazon.

The Birdcage is a wonderful movie. :) I saw it when it came out years ago and picked it up recently on DVD when they re-released it with Nathan Lane's The Producers. It is not a musical, of course. The only real disappointment is that they don't have any of the songs from the musical in the movie, at all. :(

Probably because the American film (which is one of my favourites, by the way, I have seen it at least 20 times and use quotes from it in my everyday life) is based on the French original (which is also hilarious). The musical was made six years after the original film.

And I would recommend the original Broadway recording of the musical as a warm-up. ;)
