 LES MIZ --- 21st Birthday
« Thread Started on Sept 15, 2006, 1:26pm »

Is anyone else going to the 21st Birthday special performance on Saturday 7th October?

It will be our 5th time of going :) :) :)

Our son, is a huge fan as well.

I wish PQ was going to be Javert though.

There is a special concert this afternoon that will be on Radio 2 on Sunday 8th October - the actual anniversary :) :) :)

There will be major cast changes in the legendary West End musical “LES MISERABLES” at the Queen’s Theatre on Monday 26 June. Hans Peter Janssens returns to the show to play ‘Javert’, having already starred as ‘Jean Valjean’ at the Palace Theatre in London; he will be the first actor to have played both ‘Jean Valjean’ and ‘Javert’ in the West End. Jon Lee returns to “LES MISERABLES” to play ‘Marius’, which he played to great acclaim at both the Palace and Queen’s Theatres; he played the title role in Cameron Mackintosh’s production of “Oliver!” at the London Palladium and was part of the hugely successful pop group S Club 7.Simon Bailey, recently seen in “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” and “We Will Rock You”, will play ‘Enjolras’. Chris Vincent, who recently played ‘Javert’ in the European tour of “LES MISERABLES”, will play ‘Thénardier’. Sophia Ragavelas returns to the show to play ‘Fantine’, having already played ‘Eponine’ in “LES MISERABLES”, both at the Palace and Queen’s Theatres, and who starred as ‘Sophie’ in “Mamma Mia!” at the Prince of Wales Theatre. Sabrina Aloueche, who played ‘Young Cosette’ in “LES MISERABLES” at the Palace Theatre, will play ‘Eponine’. Gina Beck will be making her West End debut playing ‘Cosette’.

John Owen-Jones and Tracie Bennett will continue to star in the production as ‘Jean Valjean’ and ‘Madame Thénardier’.

The legendary West End musical “LES MISERABLES” at the Queen’s Theatre Shaftesbury Avenue, which is now in its 21st year, is booking until 6 January 2007. Seen by over 53 million people worldwide in 38 countries and in 21 languages, “LES MISERABLES” remains one of the world’s most popular musicals. There have been 33 cast recordings of “LES MISERABLES”, including the multi-platinum London cast recording and the Grammy Award-winning Broadway cast and complete symphonic albums. The video of the 10th Anniversary Royal Albert Hall Gala Concert has sold well over one million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling musical videos ever in the UK. The Cameron Mackintosh/Royal Shakespeare Company production of “LES MISERABLES” by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg is based on the novel by Victor Hugo, has lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer and music by Claude-Michel Schönberg, with original text by Alain Boublil and additional material by James Fenton. “LES MISERABLES” is adapted and directed by Trevor Nunn and John Caird.

“LES MISERABLES” is still being produced around the world. There are over 1,000 productions of the Les Misérables School’s Edition scheduled or being performed by over 100,000 school children in the US and UK, making it the most successful musical ever produced in schools. “LES MISERABLES” became the first full-scale Western musical to play in China in the English language when it opened for a limited run at the Shanghai Grand Theatre in June 2002, where it sold out to a rapturous reception. Plans are well advanced for a Chinese language production of “LES MISERABLES” to premiere in Shanghai, co-produced by Cameron Mackintosh and the Shanghai Grand Theatre in early 2008. On 22 October this year, “LES MISERABLES” will return to Broadway where it will play at the Broadhurst Theatre for a limited six months.

LES MISÉRABLES CELEBRATORY CONCERT
Radio 2 celebrates the 21st anniversary of Les Misérables with a special concert performance.

On 8 October 1985, Les Misérables opened at the Barbican Theatre, London and a new chapter in musical theatre history began. (The show then moved to London's Palace Theatre on 4 December 1985 and on 12 March 1987 the American version opened at the Broadway Theatre).

Based on the novel by Victor Hugo, Les Misérables by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg, with lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer, has since travelled the globe winning many major awards, including eight Tonys.

To celebrate both the 21st anniversary of this classic musical and the 60th birthday of producer and impresario Cameron Mackintosh, Radio 2 presents a celebratory concert performance of Boublil & Schönberg's Les Misérables; to be broadcast on Radio 2 on the 21st birthday of the show itself - 8 October 2006 at 1900-2030.

From The Mermaid in London, the current West End cast join the BBC Concert Orchestra, conducted by Stephen Brooker, and narrator Anthony Andrews. The show stars:

John Owen-Jones - Jean Valjean
Hans Peter Janssens - Javert
Sophia Ragavlelas - Fantine
Sabrina Aloueche - Eponine
Chris Vincent - Thenardier
Tracie Bennett - Mdm Thenardier
Jon Lee - Marius
Gina Beck - Cosette
Simon Bailey - Enjolras
Ross McCormack - Gavroche

Also, on Tuesday 17 October at 2030 on Radio 2, you can hear Michael Parkinson in conversation with Sir Cameron Mackintosh, with contributions from friends, performers and colleagues from throughout his career.

Find out everything there is to know about the musical on the official Les Misérables website.

Thanks for editing the link to the photo :) :) :)

No, PQ didn't sing in the finale :'( :'( :'(

It was the cast from 1985 so it was before he joined, it was Roger Allam that was Javert.

I was soooooo hoping he was going to be on stage. In the special programme there are photos of all the casts from all over the world and so he is there as Javert :D :D :D

The atmosphere was amazing though, the actors seemed to be really buzzing and the show almost stopped when John Owen-Jones sang "Bring him Home" because of all the cheering and clapping :) :) :)

I was disappointed with Hans Peter Janssens as Javert because of his timing and phrasing, I wished it could have been Jeff Nicholson {the understudy} as we have seen Jeff several times before as Javert.

BUT no-one can match PQ as Javert.

I am just waiting for news of the DVD now.
